Visit the blue city of Morocco

Chefchaouen has been increasingly popular with visitors in recent years who just fell in love with its charm. They visit Chefchaouen because it is one of the most fashionable sites due to its beautiful beauty and unusual tones of blue. As a result, it has surpassed other international tourist spots.

Chefchaouen is a tiny city in northwest Morocco, situated around 600 meters above sea level at the foot of the Rif Mountains.

It distinguishes out for its small lanes and whitewashed buildings coated in smalt blue, if you visit Chefchaouen, you will notice that it is wonderfully placed on the edge of the mountain. This distinct personality has given it the moniker “Blue Pearl.”

According to locals in Chaouen, this hue was chosen to ward against bugs. The blue tone of the walls evokes the sound of running water, causing the insects to flee. Others find that blue colors keep their houses cool throughout the summer.

It is also claimed to be an homage to the mountain’s water sources, including the Ras el-Maa waterfall. Finally, the sky-blue and whitewashed buildings and residences are not unique to Chefchaouen. They may also be seen in other Mediterranean towns (Morocco, Tunisia, Greece, etc.) and are reminiscent of the deep blue of the Mediterranean.

  • Kasbah Chefchaouen

The exquisite Andalusian gardens, located in the heart of the medina, create a quiet green respite that contrasts with the city’s soothing blue. The Ethnographic Museum, also known as the Kasbah Museum, is located inside these grounds and welcomes tourists to explore its unrivaled collection of objects that depict the heritage of the Chefchaouen region, ranging from pottery to musical instruments. A modest art gallery is also located within the museum. This is a must-see for everyone interested in learning about Chefchaouen’s history and culture.

  • Ras El Ma

This is the spot where the pure water from the mountain rushes into the city, and it is translated as “head of the water.” It is also a favorite hangout spot for locals. These cool waterfalls are a nice contrast to the larger and farther away mountain waterfalls. The residents congregate here to socialize around the water fountain.

People travel to Chefchaouen because it is so much more than a postcard. It has a lot to offer in terms of attractions. Its original Medina, Kasbah, and Great Mosque, which stands in the heart of the plaza “Outa el Hammam” with its octagonal minaret, are all part of its rich past.

The abandoned Spanish mosque, which sits on a hill just a few feet from the source of Ras El Ma, provides a spectacular perspective of the city. Hikers will be ecstatic as well. The Akchour waterfalls or the God’s Bridge (a natural arch in the rock) are well worth the trip.

  • The Great Mosque

The Great Mosque of Chefchaouen, with its stunning and distinctive octagonal minaret, is frequently the focus of tourist visits, which is not unexpected considering the prominence of mosques in Moroccan culture.

The exquisite echoes of the call to prayer, which is sounded five times a day, create a wonderful mood, and the majestic building goes back to the 15th century. The mosque is one of the city’s most important structures and an absolute must-see.

Where to stay in Chefchaouen ?

It is not difficult to find a hotel in Chefchaouen. In the city, there are hundreds of hotels, guesthouses, and riads. Chefchaouen is a world-famous destination, and despite being a little town nestled between the Rif Mountains, it is a blue jewel that attracts millions of people every year.

The list you’ll see below is the result of a selection of the top hotels in Chefchaouen based on a variety of factors (hotels price, customer reviews, location, value for money etc.).

  • Lina Ryad

The Lina Ryad & Spa, a 4-star hotel in the heart of Chefchaouen’s medina, is one of the city’s most well-known establishments. With a lovely roof and a patio with a panoramic view of the medina.

The hotel offers an indoor pool and a hammam, as well as everything else you’d expect from a hotel in this price category.

  • Dar Ba Sidi

This location is just magnificent. One of Chefchaouen’s most popular destinations. You should be aware that guests from all over the city and beyond come to Dar Ba Sidi specifically to stay because of its distinctive charm and living environment.

Dar Ba Sidi & Spa is a 12-kilometer drive from Chefchaouen city center and features an outdoor pool, a common lounge, a patio, and a restaurant offering traditional Moroccan cuisine.

A flat-screen TV, a desk, and a private bathroom are included in every room at the guesthouse.

  • Dar Echchaouen Riad

Northeast of the medina is another oasis of serenity. A guesthouse near Ras El Ma is Riad Dar Echchaouen. If you arrive by vehicle, you will be accommodated with a private restroom and free parking.

Dar Echchaouen is one of Chefchaouen’s top restaurants, providing authentic Moroccan cuisine. A swimming pool with a garden is also available at the riad.

  • Cherifa Riad

Riad Cherifa is a new hotel in Chefchaouen, barely 2 minutes from Outa El Hammam square, in the heart of the medina. It is a beautiful lodging not far from the Kasbah.

Riad Cherifa features a lovely, well-lit patio where you may have a continental breakfast with regional specialities.

The riad’s rooms are well-equipped, with flat-screen televisions, free Wi-Fi, and ample storage and private bathrooms.

Chefchaouen, Morocco’s blue city, is a genuinely stunning city with appropriately blue walls and majestic mountains towering above this character-filled city.

It is an old and attractive city, is well worth a visit; there is lots to see and do.

Tourism in Morocco: a post-COVID success story

According to the Ministry of Tourism, Handicrafts, and Economy, visitor arrivals totaled 6.5 million persons in the first six months of this year, a 21% increase over the same period last year. “The figures for June confirm the upward trajectory that tourism has been on since January 2023.”

The number of arrivals is expected to reach 6.5 million by the end of June 2023, a 21% increase over the previous year, according to a ministry brief on tourist arrivals.

According to the same source, the volume of arrivals at border checkpoints reached approximately 1.4 million visitors in June, a +25% increase over 2019.

Several markets contributed to this achievement, including Spain (+79% vs. 2019), the United States, Canada, the Israeli market (+96% vs. 2019), the United Kingdom (+23% vs. 2019), and Portugal (+16% vs. 2019)

The ministry explains that numerous partnerships have been signed with Tour Operators and online travel agencies in order to secure 2.8 million customers for the 2023 summer season, which is double the volume secured for the 2019 summer season.

According to the press release, Fatim-Zahra Ammor, Minister of Tourism, Crafts, and the Social and Solidarity Economy, stated that “the indicators of the sector testify to the very good health of our tourism.”

And to add: “Our ambitions are obviously more important within the framework of the roadmap, and we will continue to work with the entire industry and deploy the necessary means to achieve our quantitative and qualitative objectives”

Tourism, a key foreign exchange earner, produced 41 billion dirhams (MMDH) in foreign currency receipts by the end of May 2023, representing a 42% increase over the same time in 2019.
