The 8 Best Surfing Spots In Morocco

Wild coasts, sometimes cut off by fine sandy beaches, sometimes bordered by white cliffs, the Atlantic sees the desert marrying the ocean.

On the Atlantic coast, the best surf spots follow each other and are not alike! Each beach offers a unique landscape, very different waves, sliding possibilities for all tastes.

To the delight of surfers in Morocco !

Thousands of birds, some of which are endangered like the bald ibis, calmly share the expanses of the shores with gliding enthusiasts.

All water sports are practiced here and many clubs offer introductory courses in windsurfing, diving, surfing, water ski, Kite surfing or even Jet Skis. The coast can also be visited on horseback, mountain biking, or why not on the back of a camel.

1. Safi :

Safi is resolutely turned towards the sea, but it is above all its spot, famous and recognized worldwide, that fascinates board sports enthusiasts. Regular, fast and powerful, the particularity of the Safi wave is its ability to form a tube over a length that varies between 800 and 1000 meters.

Surf pros compare it to Australia’s and rank it among the top ten in the world. The location and the good wind conditions also attract fans of wind and kite surfing.

2. Essaouira :

Whether you are a winter sports enthusiast or a professional water rider, the Essaouira bay offers golden sand that is always tender, the sun always present, and especially the wind, because Essaouira is the city of the trade winds.

A unique and still wild nature, a great diversity of point breaks, reef breaks and beach breaks, the spiritual and human cultural richness of a land full of beauty and energy. Such is the success of the Essaouira spot.

3. Taghazout :

Taghazout beach, Surf, Morocco

Taghazout is the surf village par excellence. Long straights and excellent beach breaks alternate on this coastline and delight surfers of all levels, from beginners to pro. The “Killer Point” wave is named after the orca (Killer whales) that can be seen from time to time in the area. After surfing, do not hesitate to go to the “banana village”, they make the best tagines in southern Morocco.

Further south, 120 km from Agadir, the small village of Mireleft attracts both fishermen and surfers. Its beaches overlooked by vertiginous cliffs offer a unique panorama for lovers of surfing or bodyboarding.

4. White Beach of Tan-Tan :

Over nearly 50 kilometers, the mythical White Beach of Tan-Tan is a virgin stretch of fine sand, bordered by a sea with rows of high and sovereign waves, frontal and roaring.

In the middle of the dunes, this secluded corner of paradise includes an ornithological reserve “the Khnifiss National Park ” where cormorants and flamingos take refuge. The color of the flamingos contrasts surprisingly with the blue of the sky which is reflected on the waters of the wadi.

5. Oued Chbika of Tan-Tan :

Finally, a spot in full development, Oued Chbika offers the region multiple hotel infrastructures to welcome the many enthusiasts who stay there.

When you leave Tan-Tan, you will be surprised to discover the impressive “Devil’s Hole”, a pit of more than 30 meters in diameter and depth. The ocean rushes into it through an underground gallery.

6. Cape Juby : Nayla in Tarfaya :

Further on, the lagoon of Nayla is a superb place sought after by surfers for its opulent seabed. Separated from the ocean by a large cordon of dunes over several tens of meters, the lagoon allows surfers, windsurfers, body surfers of all levels to have fun.

Suitable for fishing as shown by the huts on the shore and the wrecks of boats, witnesses of the violence of the storms, Tarfaya, formerly Cap Juby, was one of the Aéropostale relays between Casablanca and Dakar. The city is famous thanks to the literary works of Saint-Exupéry, who was one of the famous pilots of the Aéropostale. Tarfaya hosts a small museum dedicated to his memory.

From Tarfaya to Laayoune, you can visit picturesque fishing villages. We fish all kinds of fish and shellfish, but more particularly lobster and lobster.

The 40 km peninsula, with its tranquility and its migratory birds, presents ideal surfing conditions: a perfect and long straight wave. Thanks to an equally constant wind, wind and kite surfers have also found a paradise here.

Tourism in Morocco: a post-COVID success story

According to the Ministry of Tourism, Handicrafts, and Economy, visitor arrivals totaled 6.5 million persons in the first six months of this year, a 21% increase over the same period last year. “The figures for June confirm the upward trajectory that tourism has been on since January 2023.”

The number of arrivals is expected to reach 6.5 million by the end of June 2023, a 21% increase over the previous year, according to a ministry brief on tourist arrivals.

According to the same source, the volume of arrivals at border checkpoints reached approximately 1.4 million visitors in June, a +25% increase over 2019.

Several markets contributed to this achievement, including Spain (+79% vs. 2019), the United States, Canada, the Israeli market (+96% vs. 2019), the United Kingdom (+23% vs. 2019), and Portugal (+16% vs. 2019)

The ministry explains that numerous partnerships have been signed with Tour Operators and online travel agencies in order to secure 2.8 million customers for the 2023 summer season, which is double the volume secured for the 2019 summer season.

According to the press release, Fatim-Zahra Ammor, Minister of Tourism, Crafts, and the Social and Solidarity Economy, stated that “the indicators of the sector testify to the very good health of our tourism.”

And to add: “Our ambitions are obviously more important within the framework of the roadmap, and we will continue to work with the entire industry and deploy the necessary means to achieve our quantitative and qualitative objectives”

Tourism, a key foreign exchange earner, produced 41 billion dirhams (MMDH) in foreign currency receipts by the end of May 2023, representing a 42% increase over the same time in 2019.

Morocco reopens its airspace in February after more than 2 months of closure

The Moroccan government has decided to reopen the airspace from February 7 to flights to and from the country, after more than two months of closure, according to a statement released Thursday evening by the MAP agency.

Authorities were under pressure from a bankrupt tourism sector and Moroccans stranded abroad to unblock borders closed since November 29 due to an outbreak of the Omicron variant.

“This decision comes in accordance with the legal provisions relating to the management of the state of health emergency and following the recommendations of the scientific and technical commission and taking into account the evolution of the epidemiological situation in the kingdom”, indicates the press release.

“To support the implementation of this decision, a technical commission is currently examining the measures to be adopted at the border posts and the conditions required for travelers, which will be announced later”, specifies the same source.

The government also extended Thursday the state of health emergency in force since 2020, throughout the territory, until February 28.

Royal Air Maroc (RAM) announced, this Friday, the resumption of its international scheduled flights, on its entire network, from February 7, 2022, date of the reopening of the Moroccan borders within the framework of measures related to the Covid-19 health crisis. Pending the resumption of regular air traffic, special flights continue to operate from January 28 to February 6, 2022, to Paris, Brussels, Milan, Barcelona and Madrid.

In reference to the government’s decision, announced Thursday evening, RAM is preparing to reschedule its flights to and from Morocco, thus replacing the special one-way flights, operated on a limited basis in recent months to a few international destinations. In a press release, the airline indicated that “the flight program will thus include direct flights connecting Morocco to around fifty airports in Europe, Africa, America, the Middle East and Asia”.

According to the same source, the RAM “will strengthen its flight program with a gradual increase in the number of frequencies and destinations”, to better support travelers as part of the resumption of international traffic. In this sense, the company recalls that the trips will be carried out “in strict compliance with the conditions required by the public authorities which will be announced later, in order to guarantee the health and safety” of customers and staff.

Tickets for flights available for sale can be purchased through RAM’s website, through its call centers and sales agencies, as well as through the travel agency network, the company said.

Until 4 p.m. this Friday, 4,899 cases of the new coronavirus have been recorded in Morocco. Thus, the total number of people infected since the start of the health crisis in the country has reached 1,124,986. In addition, 24,653,642 people have received, until today, the first dose of the vaccine against Covid-19. , while 23,071,933 received the second and 4,358,048 received the third.

Billionaire Richard Branson to Invest in Moroccan Tourism

With properties and investments around the world, from the British Necker Island to South African Ulusaba Reserve, entrepreneur and Virgin Group founder Richard Branson still makes sure to visit Morocco at least twice a year.

In his latest visit to Morocco, Sir Branson was delighted to stay at his magical Virgin Limited Edition retreat, Kasbah Tamadot,  up in the Atlas Mountains in Morocco.

The story of this Award-winning retreat began when Sir Branson visited Morocco in 1998 while he was preparing for a ballooning expedition.

It was then that Brandon’s parents discovered Kasbah Tamadot and convinced him to buy it from Luciano Tempo, an Italian antique dealer and interior designer.

Since then Sir Branson has transformed Kasbah Tamadot and its surroundings into a lavish retreat and the No.1 resort hotel in North Africa and the Middle East in the Travel+ Leisure World’s Best Awards 2021.

Interested in visiting Kasbah Tamadot? Here is everything you need to know…

Situated in the spectacular High Atlas Mountains in Morocco, Kasbah Tamadot is only an hour’s drive south of Marrakech near the village of Asni.

This magical retreat has 28 rooms. Each room is distinctly decorated to reflect the architecture of the building in Moroccan/ Berber style, beautifully featuring antiques from all over the world.

Besides the exotically styled rooms and salons inside the building, there are so many more opportunities for having luxurious fun.

The Kasbah offers a four-room spa with a hammam and Watsu pools, multiple Jacuzzis, two tennis courts, a billboard room, a fully equipped gym, and a library and kids’ club.

The landscape surrounding Kasbah Tamadot also boasts a spectacular garden, an infinity pool, and an outdoor cinema.

Other fun activities you can do at Kasbah Tamadot include:

Getting cooking lessons: get hands-on interactive cooking sessions with a chef who will walk you step-by-step through how to make some of our more popular dishes.

Mule Riding: get the chance to discover the High Atlas Mountains and trek to the local village in a traditional way by riding the local’s mules.

Trekking and cycling: If you like to stay active at all times, trekking or cycling the mountains surrounding Kasbah might be perfect for you. Check out Branson’s latest video exploring the “winding paths and steep inclines made for some challenging bike rides in the most stunning of settings”

Here you can also buy all sorts of local crafts and Artisanal Products to take back home.

How much should you expect to pay to book a stay at Kasbah Tamadot?

Double rooms go for £488 in low seasons and go up to £580 in high seasons. Berber tents start from £870.

Richard Branson Plans to Invest in Dakhla’s Tourism Industry.

In his latest visit to Morocco, Sir Branson has left with a newfound interest in southern Morocco and potential investment plans in the Western Sahara coast, particularly in the hotel and kitesurfing sectors.

After this visit to Dakhla, a city known for its tourist assets,  Dakhla Spot Online reported that Sir Branson has confirmed his plans to invest in the region saying:

“I am captivated by Dakhla and its region and I will come back to kitesurf and certainly invest.”

Accompanied by his family and friends, Sir Branson visited various sites in the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab region.

The billionaire made his stay at Ocean Vagabond Hotel before downwinding to kitesurf in the  White Dune for an hour and a half. He capped the day off in Dakhla by joining his family and guests for dinner at  Dakhla Attitude Hotel.

Most Underrated Cities and Places to Visit in Morocco

As the holidays approach, travelers  visiting Morocco often plan their trips around the handful most popular touristy  attractions in Morocco such a Fez, Chefchaouen, Marrakech, Ouarzazate, Agadir, Tangier or Casablanca.

For a distinctive experience however, whether you are visiting Morocco for the first time or you are re-visiting for more, you may want to stroll away from the crowds and visit lesser known places in Morocco that are no less vibrant or enticing.

Want to know more? Let us take you through a list of  the best underrated places in Morocco.

Morocco Most Underrated Cities :

1. Meknes

Located in the Middle Atlas region, the historic city of Meknes is plausibly one of the most underrated of Morocco’s four imperial cities ( that is, Fez, Meknes, Marrakesh, and Rabat). Meknes is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its vestiges of important monuments and historical heritage  placed in a rapidly changing urban environment. Meknes remarkably represents fortification architecture through its voluminous ramparts built in the Hispano-Moorish style reflecting elements of both Islamic and European architecture  and design.

Listed below are some of the top places you should visit in Meknes.

  • Bab Al-Mansour

The magnificent Bab Al-Mansour, one of the biggest gates in Meknes, is the main gate between Meknes’ Medina and Imperial City. Its design is one of the most exquisite  architectural delights not only in Africa but the world.

  • Volubilis

Just about 19 Kilometers beyond the fortified walls of Meknes is the ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis, one of the best preserved archaeological sites in Morocco. Located at the top of a hill, overlooking the countryside below it, Volubilis’ remnant forum, arch and palace make an incredible ambiance that brings together nature and antiquity to give you a walk spanning from the  amazigh’s kingdom to the roman imperial city up to the early islamic dynasty.

Here is an overview of the city’s landmarks that will have it climb its way up in your to-visit-list.

Combined, these monuments grant this place a cinematographic  atmosphere. In fact, many TV productions did take place there, among which is Orson Welles’ “Othello”.
