Discover the beauty of the Gorges of Morocco : Todgha & Dades

Morocco is the land of a thousand contrasts. With its diversity of landscapes, exceptional cuisine, and breathtaking nature, coupled with an extraordinary cultural and human heritage, Morocco is enticing.

In Morocco, nature has given free rein to its imagination. From the Atlas to the Rif Mountains, from the Atlantic coast to the Mediterranean shores, from the wide sandy bays to small isolated rocky coves, from the southern large golden dunes to green oasis, the charm is boundless.

From the luxuriant forests to the barren high plains, from the deep wadis to the incomparable caves and gorges , from the lakes and waterfalls to the daunting Kasbahs, Morocco’s wonders lie before you as far as your eye can see, endowed with history and wild beauty.

A Country of unusual landscapes and memorable views, Morocco will surprise those who are curious enough to go beyond its trodden paths to discover its true nature. (Underrated places to visit in Morocco)

Its multiple crafts offer the best traditions culminating in a jealously guarded know-how by generations of craftsmen.

A country rich with flavors, contrasts, unsuspected treasures and new acquaintances, full of throbbing memories in the authentic medinas and the untouched alleys of its cities.

A natural enclave, Morocco offers sports and adventure lovers all types of sporting activities including mountain biking excursions, rafting in the upper rivers, canyoning, paragliding and hiking in beautiful deserts and gorges.

Dades Gorge :

A twisting piece of blacktop known by locals as the “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs” leads to the famous Dades Gorge in the beautiful countryside of Morocco.

Whether you consider them one gorge or several, the scenic valleys of the Dades River are lined with hundreds of Islamic cities, citadels, palm trees, and desert sands, which make it one of the most historic roads in the country.

Passing by Dades Gorges within Morocco vacations, Remember to visit:

  • Mhamid (Moroccan desert like Merzouga)
  • Azrou
  • Rissani
  • Fez

Travelers say it’s the rolling red hills of the Dades Gorges (Gorges du Dadès) that are truly worth the trip.

After traveling switchbacks by car, visitors can wander the quiet paths of this scenic destination on foot and enjoy a steaming cup of Moroccan mint tea at the top of the gorge.

Breathtaking vistas and uninterrupted views of rolling red rocks make for a memorable resting place and quiet escape before starting on a return trip to the city.

What to do in Dades Gorges ?

While you stay in your hotel, there are many things and I highly recommend you can do many different hikes either by yourself or with an experienced local guide.

Once you arrive and settle in your room you can go for a short walk through the serpent zig-zag road and from the top, you can be enjoyed by the amazing view of the river and the valley together.

Dades Gorges
Dades Gorges

Another walk you can choose is to go 27 km through the gorge with a guide, this might be around 3 or 4 hours.

In case you have plenty of time, a 3-day-walk with a guide to Todgha Gorge may be an unforgettable experience in life where you can go deep into wild paths and see the nomadic lifestyle of Berber people.

Also, walking alongside the river is another activity recommended to find relaxation with the sound of the water and the enormous red walls of stone where you may find some shepherd guiding his flock of sheep.

This is very authentic to see in Morocco. You have a lot of things to do in Dades gorges here are some of them:

Explore Fossils and Rock Formations: Valley of Human Bodies

However strange it may sound, exploring through different types and sizes of rocks in Dades Valley is an experience that is hard to find elsewhere. Once submerged into a deep sea, the place is full of remnants, remains, rocks, and fossils that date back to hundreds of millions of years ago.

At the very start of the valley, there are geological formations referred to as Monkey Feet and Monkey Toes. These formations earn the unusual moniker from their inexplicable wind-worn silhouette.

A little remote from the Monkey Feet formation is yet another valley known as the “Valley of Human Bodies”! Many starving travelers have died there of hunger and turned into stones, thus earning the valley this grave name.

The high mountains and other geological formations house many fossils, especially those of trilobite which is an arthropod that survived for ages before getting lost by the end of the Permian Period.

Other than the fossils, you will find small rocks with many fossil graphic prints that are every bit as fascinating. To be standing on the rocky land and wondering if it was once the floor of a deep-sea is truly exciting.

A walk Around Sightseeing the Kasbahs of the Valley

Commonly referred to as the Land of a Thousand Kasbahs, Dades Valley is home to many ancient buildings that were built to protect the valley against invasion.

These pinkish square houses create a picturesque variation against the green river and brown bare hills. Many of these houses were built in the 12th century and still stand strong, while others are crumbling down under the weight of time.

Either way, these small fortresses serve as a window for the visitors who want to sneak into the ancient past of the Moroccan lifestyle. The most famous kasbah is Kasbah Amridil, which is located in Skoura.

Skoura Palmeraie – Oasis of 1000 Palms

Skoura Oasis
Skoura Oasis

About an hour and a half away from the Dades Valley is the vast UNESCO-protected palmeraie of Skoura.

Referred to as the “Oasis of 1000 Palms”, it offers a peaceful place with numerous green lush palm groves to rumble around and unwind after a long trip into the rocks and canyons of Dades.

The green covering is enclosed by a 15-mile patchwork of gardens that still use the ancient Cheetara system of locks, levers, and canals to water the plants.

Todgha Gorges :

Located just 48 minutes away from the Dades Valley is the Todgha Gorges that were carved by both Todgha and neighboring Dades Rivers.

This wadi is a series of limestone river canyons that are flanked by as much as 400-meter high walls.

Todgha Gorges offer a hundred hiking trails to set your foot on and get indulged in the extreme sport.

Overlooking the hiking trail are the splendid pink mountains that are tinted green and gold. Stretched across approximately 1,000 feet above, these cliffs create a stunning panoramic view.

 Todgha Gorges

To conclude if you are an extreme sport lover, a peaceful environment seeker, or just a normal old fashion tourist, you will definitely be fascinated about what Morocco can offer in terms of geological landscapes especially gorges and canyons, you are more than welcome to visit and pay yourself an amazing life experience.

The best things to do in Al Hoceima

Al Hoceima, in the northern part of Morocco, is the place to mark when you’re looking for a beach holiday where you can get away from it all.

With breath taking beaches of white sand and its gentle light waves azure Mediterranean waters, Al Hoceima is ideal whether you’re after a relaxing break, something more active or a holiday of exploration.

The town of Al Hoceima, located in the bay of the same name, is a city of blue and white houses perched on cliffs facing the sea, on a slope leading down to the fishing port from the city centre.

This well-known tourist city has the perfect balance of stunning beaches and dramatic mountains. Being the capital of the Al Hoceima province, this Riffian city is a popular summer destination for Europeans wanting to escape to the ocean.

Al Hoceima

The influence of Spain is visible in this city, founded in 1920 during the years of the Rif War and which still preserves some of the architectural features of the colonial period.

In Mohamed VI Square, the city centre, located on Quemado Beach, is the Melchor de Jovellanos cultural centre, of Spanish ownership, in what used to be the former headquarters of the military command.

Nearby, is the Royal Palace and access to the port and beach, as well as Chiita Park.

To the south, the Plaza del Rif or Florido, the old city centre and Cala Bonita. To the west, the Cebadilla beach.

Al Hoceima is a city dedicated to tourism and fishing. In the summer season, its lively streets are filled with visitors attracted by the beaches and nature of the province.

Every evening, the boats arrive at the port with the daily catch from the sea which is distributed in the markets, restaurants and eating houses around the port and in the city.

The Mediterranean Pearl, as it is affectionately known, is one of the safest cities in Morocco such as Tangier, Agadir … and relies on tourism and the fishing industry to drive its economy.

What brings all the Europeans to Al Hoceima every summer are the beaches and beautiful places to stay while exploring the area.

You can take a boat out and go scuba diving, enjoy a meal at one of the top restaurants, just spend some ‘you time’ at a luxurious spa, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

But it’s not all man made development in the area; much of the area is unspoiled countryside and you should definitely consider visiting the nearby regions, as their are lots of treasures that adventure lovers come in droves to explore.

Al Hoceima City Tour

1. Wild beaches, nature and aquamarine waters

It’s hard to resist the allure of the Mediterranean coast, but when you throw in sunny skies and a small city vibe, Al Hoceima has some of the best beaches to visit in Morocco.

For you, holidays rhyme with relaxation on paradisaical beaches, Al Hoceima, isn’t nicknamed « the Mediterranean pearl » for nothing, thanks to the variety and beauty of its bays, it is the ideal place for you.

The beaches like quemado are considered as one of the most beautiful in the world, You’ll be able to bask in the sun , while admiring the beauty of the natural sites around you.

Al Hoceima beach

Admire the mountainous landscapes of the Tala Youssef beach, jump into the turquoise water of the Bades beach or lie down on the fine sand of the Armoud beach.

2. Al Hoceima National Park

Bordered by the waters of the Mediterranean, the natural park of Al Hoceima, cut by high cliffs, presents an outstanding relief that draws the massif of Bokkoyas.

The landscapes are wonderful : green in spring, more sparse during the summer, they bathe in the clear light of the Moroccan sun.

A footpath crosses them which allows you to discover the interior of the park by walk. It is lined with gites and, for several days, you can venture out to discover the local fauna and flora.

In the Moroccan Rif, the Taghzout valley is another amazing spot. Being a hundred kilometres away from Al Hoceima, the magnetic site will invite you to stay longer.

You would be missing out if you didn’t visit this stunning park. Take in the stunning landscapes and visit the 800 year old Mosque with its old Berber village in Adouz.

What better way to embrace the local history and explore the natural beauty of Morocco than here?

Al Hoceima National Park can be accessed from the east, from Izemouren, in the direction of Tafensa, or from Rouadi, 30 kilometres from the city of Al Hoceima, a town known for its souk or Sunday market, Had el Rouadi, and for the Rif folk crafts market based mainly on wicker, clay pottery and traditional wood carving.

Taoussart and Adouz are two douars, or villages, located within the Al Hoceima National Park.

Al Hoceima National Park

From Rouadi, try to head towards Taoussart. One the way to this small douar one truly starts to get to know the National Park of Al Hoceima. The Bokkoya massif forms an environment with a great variety of native vegetation and animal fauna.

The coastline features a rugged rocky coastline. The limestone massif continues to the sea, forming cliffs that in some cases reach 700 metres high, creating a landscape of great visual richness.

The hiking trails, designed to promote ecotourism in the park, enable visitors to discover coves with crystalline waters hidden among the cliffs.

The 700 step beach, can be reached from Taoussart; a walk between small villages, whitewashed hamlets, fruit trees, forests of carob trees, fig trees, thyme, rosemary, lavender and araar, brings us closer to the cliffs and to the coast, to the Taydywine cove.

The cove of Bousekour is located to the east, closer to Al Hoceima. To the west, the coves of Topoz or Tikkit are not far from Adouz.

3. The beach of Tikkit

The beach of Tikkit, hidden at the foot of the mountain, is a small beach featuring round pebbles.

This is a good place to go diving or snorkelling and to enjoy the rich marine biodiversity of the Mediterranean coast. The marabout of Lala Tikkit or Lala Miomouna is highlighted.

This is only marabout in the area built in honour of a woman, supposedly a holy princess, born on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, who arrived alone to the Kabyle of the Bokkaya, fleeing from war, and who surrendered everything for spiritual life and prayer.

A path among almond trees, prickly pears and palm hearts separates Adouz from the douar of Taunil.

In its rural souk we can find a good sample of the characteristic craftsmanship of the area, including hats, djellabas, clay handicrafts and braided palm leaves. From Taounil, we continue to Torres.

The beach of Tikkit in Al Hoceima

The village is named after the five towers built by the Portuguese on the hilltop at the northern side of the village.
The closeness of the mountains and cliffs and the beaches that surround this small fishing village have made Torres a highly-valued destination for inland tourism in Morocco.

From Torres, it is possible to hike along the coast, following natural paths, until Bades, the second Islamic city built in Morocco, after Nekor. Nowadays, it is possible to visit the remaining ruins of its ancient walls and buildings.

Al Hoceima National Park Route5 Bades beach is a gravel cove facing the rock of Vélez de la Gomera.
Of Spanish sovereignty, this rock measures 260 meters long, between 15 and 100 meters wide and 87 meters high at its highest point.

Among outstanding scenery, the rock is located at one end of Cape Baba surrounded by mountains. Originally, the rock was a small island very close to the coast. An earthquake left the island permanently attached to the mainland in 1930.

The rope that separates Morocco from the Spanish islet is the smallest border in the world, measuring only 85 metres long.

4. Cala Iris

At the western end of the Al Hoceima National Park, no more than five kilometres from Torres, Cala Iris is located, a fishing village nestled in a horseshoe-shaped bay featuring one of the finest beaches on the northern coast of Morocco.

Surrounded by the mountains that conform the park and facing the islets that stand out in the bay, Cala Iris offers a striking landscape.

Cala Iris Beach

We reach the part where you can be sure that you had an image of the truly nature of the Al Hoceima region a splendid hinterland with magnificent landscapes in the middle of which is enjoyable to relax, and to challenge your limits There is nothing left but backpacking for your holiday we are waiting to see you soon for a unique lifetime experience.

As the majority of countries around the world started lifting COVID-19 travel restrictions, this year’s World’s Best Awards survey was open for voting spanning  January 11 through May 10, 2021.

This year, several Moroccan establishments have claimed their space in the Best Awards list as some of the top hotels and resorts in Africa and the Middle East. Three of which are in Marrakesh. The toursim guide of Tangier city

Tangier is one of the most special places in Morocco.

Tangier is an exotic city situated in the very north of the country, the bright white city has been a gateway to the much loved kingdom since the fifth century BC, its proximity to Spain makes it an ideal place to enter Morocco, a great launch pad from which to explore more of the country.

Tangier before anything else is a port city situated on a chock point between the atlantic ocean and the mediteranian sea, the moroccan coast is a rich fishing ground with the Atlantic to the west, mediterranean to the east, Europe to the north and Africa to the south, Tangier is a melting pot of different cultures.

It’s been a gateway city for so long that it has its own unique culture, quite different to anything you’ll find anywhere else in Morocco.

Tangier Sea

But don’t be fooled with those facts, even if the geography impose that it is the closest city to Europe from Africa, it is a 100 % Moroccan through. When you visit Tangier, you’ll find a place that is rightfully proud of its heritage and culture.

Today, Tangier is an interesting mix of north Africans, Spanish, Portuguese and French. When you walk the streets, the prevailing dialect you’ll hear is Moroccan Arabic, though there is a fair bit of Spanish mixed in with that.

Around a quarter of the people speak Amazigh as their main language, while road signs are written in Arabic and French. As a city with such a blended population, visitors are always welcome and English is well understood in all hotels and tourist areas.

Tangier has inspired people for generations with its offering of fascinating history, beautiful scenery and eclectic mix of people.

The city has long been a retreat for some of the world’s most creative people. William S Burroughs, Henri Matisse; Yves Saint-Laurent …. just a few of the people who have all found peace, solace and inspiration in this charming city at the tip of Africa.

The café scene for example is an important part of Tangier culture and when you’re sitting there sipping mint tea or strong coffee, looking at the paintings decorating the walls, it’s not too much of a stretch to picture creative people like Tennessee Williams doing exactly the same thing in another era exactly where you sit.

Whether you want to spend time on the lovely beaches, take a mint tea in one of the cafés where countless writers and poets have done in generations past, or explore the old quarter, this is a place where you should spend time, never just rush through.

Tangier City

What to do in Tangier ?

Start your visit by getting a real feel for the city with an exploration of the Medina. Set in the lower part of Tangier, surrounded by 15th century Portuguese walls, passing throught you will enter a labyrinthian wonderland the old town is delighfully disorienting.

The  grand socco :

The  grand socco is an emblematic main square inside the medina, it has whitnessed the phenician presence, the greeks, the romans, all the Morrocan dinasties all the way to its international status and the independence from colonial powers,  a history built from the dawn of human civilisation until our days.  you will found on your roots a collection of stalls, shops, teahouses, riads and  traditional artisans that still work with konwledge transmitted throught generations, community hammams and  bakeries, and cloreful piles of fruits, veggies, olives and stacks of fresh bread.

The Kasbah museum :

Another must-see is the Kasbah museum which can be found at the top of the hill in the medina. It is housed in the former Sultan’s palace and is worth visiting for the building as much as the exhibitions of local artefacts it houses, which date back to prehistoric times.

Cape Spartel :

Head out next to Cape Spartel, the most northwesterly point in Africa. Just nine miles from the city, the point is marked by the Cap Spartel lighthouse that was built by an international coalition, including Morocco, the US, France and Spain.

The Caves of Hercules :

You can also check the spectacular Caves of Hercules. Legend has it the Greek hero slept here on his way to steal the golden apples from the Garden of the Hesperides. At the far end  of the caves you can see the Atlantic Ocean through an opening which was carved by the Phoenicians into the shape of Africa.

For nature-lovers, Tangier has breathtaking scenery, natural landscapes and biodiversity which will offer you a wealth of opportunities to appreciate the wonder of the natural world.

The Caves of Hercules in Tangier – Morocco

One of Tangier’s big draws is its position on the coast. As well as lovely beaches to play on, it has one of the finest and most beautiful coastlines in the world, benefiting from a unique geographical position that offers access to the sparkling Mediterranean to the east and the Atlantic Ocean to the west.

Offering a wide range of activities and water sports, like diving , kitesurfing…  it sure is a rewarding place for watersports fans.

Tangier Corniche :

For nightlife take a stroll along the Corniche, which stretches for three miles along the length of the Bay of Tangier, you’ll find sparkling marina, numerous restaurants, casinos; clubs and shops, spectacular view that stretches right over to the shores of Europe.

Tangier is a city that loves music, and the city festivals is a living proof of those vibrant vibes, the most famous festival is  Tanjazz a mix of large open-air shows and performances in more intimate surroundings in keeping with jazz’s traditional roots.

Performers come from all cities of morocco and from around the globe to appear, with its free spirit and artistic heritage, the city is the ideal place to host this event.

Discover the Hammams in Morocco: the history, the culture, the benefits and how you can enjoy your day in the Hammam

Among the endless details of Moroccan culture, there is one aspect of social life that comes highly recommended to travelers in Morocco : the hammam, heated constantly by a furnace of wood shaving, or a natural hot source of water, it’s the Moroccan equivalent to a sauna.

The history of Hammam in Morocco

Since religion is the center of Moroccan culture, the first hammams were established near mosques and  praying centers to facilitate the purification of body and soul before prayers rituals, soon the hammams baths became almost a traditional, weekly mandatory ritual among Moroccans,

Growing in popularity amongst the community, the hammam became a gathering point where people of all social classes would meet and discuss anything.

Only separated by gender, you could call it the naked truth since the purifying session is done entirely naked and allows men and women to really be themselves.

Hammams in Morocco

The ritual of the Moroccan Hammam

Today’s hammams in Morocco are a mixture of traditional rituals and modern practices that have the same goal, purifying your body from dead skin and your soul from negative vibes, from the experience of local hammams with its unmarked doorways and progressively heated rooms, to the luxury riads and their magnificent hammams, all is set to a peaceful journey of well being paradise.

Hammams are usually two buildings that separate the women’s side from the men’s, and there are various types of Hammams, there are the local traditional ones, located in small towns and popular neighborhoods, and there are more luxurious, spa like hammams often located in hotels, and there are also professional ones that maintains  the traditional bathing ritual of a Moroccan hammam.

The entry to a traditional local hammam costs around 12 to 30 MAD ( 1 – 3 DOLLARS ), spa hammams can be more expensive.

Traditional Moroccan Hammam

The ritual in hammam starts by choosing the hot room for about 15 to 20 minutes to relax and allow the pores to open, then start by applying a thin layer of black soap all over your body then, after resting for about 5 to 10 minutes it’s followed by rinsing with lots of water.

If you are in a spa Hammam, the personnel will be responsible for taking care of the entire hammam process such as the application of products, exfoliation and rinsing.

The personnel will scrape all your dead skin from your body with a kessa glove, you will be amazed by the resulting dead skin left on the tile after the treatment.

After the exfoliation process and the rinse, you will wash your hair with your usual shampoo, right after there is a purifying ghassoul mask that will absorb all impurities from your skin while mineralizing the epiderm with essential mineral elements, the clay mask will be applied all over your body, face and hair for deep cleansing and wash and then you will apply your shower gel and then deeply rinse it.

In the most luxurious hammam they will end the session by massaging and dehydrating your skin with pure Argan oil rich with vitamin E,

After all these treatments, a nourishing massage will nourish your skin and the little extra that remains is the mint tea offered to finish your moment of incomparable tranquility.

A real luxury treatment that will revive your skin letting it breath, and giving it the fresh look that we always seek.

Benefits of the Moroccan Hammam

  • Physical and emotional detox : Reduce stress, anxiety and allow deep relaxation.
  • Beautifying the body and face : Take away dead skin from your body, unclog pores while eliminating toxins from the skin and

In his latest visit to Morocco, Sir Branson was delighted to stay at his magical Virgin Limited Edition retreat, Kasbah Tamadot,  up in the Atlas Mountains in Morocco.

The story of this Award-winning retreat began when Sir Branson visited Morocco in 1998 while he was preparing for a ballooning expedition.

It was then that Brandon’s parents discovered Kasbah Tamadot and convinced him to buy it from Luciano Tempo, an Italian antique dealer and interior designer.

Since then Sir Branson has transformed Kasbah Tamadot and its surroundings into a lavish retreat and the No.1 resort hotel in North Africa and the Middle East in the Travel+ Leisure World’s Best Awards 2021.

Situated in the spectacular High Atlas Mountains in Morocco, Kasbah Tamadot is only an hour’s drive south of Marrakech near the village of Asni.

This magical retreat has 28 rooms. Each room is distinctly decorated to reflect the architecture of the building in Moroccan/ Berber style, beautifully featuring antiques from all over the world.

Besides the exotically styled rooms and salons inside the building, there are so many more opportunities for having luxurious fun.

The Kasbah offers a four-room spa with a hammam and Watsu pools, multiple Jacuzzis, two tennis courts, a billboard room, a fully equipped gym, and a library and kids’ club.

The landscape surrounding Kasbah Tamadot also boasts a spectacular garden, an infinity pool, and an outdoor cinema.

Other fun activities you can do at Kasbah Tamadot include:

Getting cooking lessons: get hands-on interactive cooking sessions with a chef who will walk you step-by-step through how to make some of our more popular dishes.

Mule Riding: get the chance to discover the High Atlas Mountains and trek to the local village in a traditional way by riding the local’s mules.

Richard Branson Plans to Invest in Dakhla’s Tourism Industry.

In his latest visit to Morocco, Sir Branson has left with a newfound interest in southern Morocco and potential investment plans in the Western Sahara coast, particularly in the hotel and kitesurfing sectors.

After this visit to Dakhla, a city known for its tourist assets,  Dakhla Spot Online reported that Sir Branson has confirmed his plans to invest in the region saying:

“I am captivated by Dakhla and its region and I will come back to kitesurf and certainly invest.”

Accompanied by his family and friends, Sir Branson visited various sites in the Dakhla-Oued Eddahab region.

The billionaire made his stay at Ocean Vagabond Hotel before downwinding to kitesurf in the  White Dune for an hour and a half. He capped the day off in Dakhla by joining his family and guests for dinner at  Dakhla Attitude Hotel.

The Top 12 Foods You Must Try in Morocco

Marked by its vibrant colors, rich seasonings, and unusual flavor combinations of sweet and savory, Moroccan cuisine is amongst the best in the world. No visit to Morocco is complete without experiencing Moroccan food.

Morocco’s culinary palette is remarkably influenced by multiple cultures, from Amazigh, Andalusian, Mediterranean, sub-Saharan to  European (French and Spanish) cuisines.

Wondering what to eat when visiting Morocco? This article will take you on a gastronomic journey to explore some of the best foods to eat in Morocco.

Couscous

Couscous is the national dish of Morocco and is usually served on Fridays or special occasions. One of the most popular versions of this dish is “couscous with seven vegetables.”

To make couscous, semolina grains are steamed over vegetable or meat stew. The couscous grains are then topped with chicken, beef or lamb and a variety of vegetables in a magnificent heap.

Like many other Moroccan dishes, couscous is served in a big communal dish that Moroccan families gather around.

Tagine

Taking its name from the traditional clay or ceramic pot that it is cooked in, Tagine is a famous slow-cooked stew dish.

Various vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, zucchini, onions, olives, dried prunes are layered on top of any meat of choice in a conical fashion to cook.

The result is an aromatic pot of delicious tender meat, vegetables, and sauce. Tagines are typically eaten from the cooking pot using bread.

Chicken With Preserved Lemons and Olives

This is another classic and popular dish in Morocco served both on special occasions and during casual dinners.

Prepared in a traditional tagine, this dish consists of a delicious daghmira (onion sauce) topped with roasted chicken and garnished with preserved lemons and olives.

Lamb/ Beef with Prunes

No list of the best foods to eat in Morocco is complete without this classic Moroccan dish.

Sure, prunes might not sound like the most appetizing, but you will be surprised by how well the sweet and savory flavors in this dish go together.

The meat in this dish is cooked with saffron, ginger, and onions until tender and is then garnished with honey-glazed prunes and fried crunchy almonds.

Harira

Moroccan Harira is traditionally a Ramadan special but it is also enjoyed by Moroccans throughout the year as a starter dish.

This tomato-based soup comes in countless variations, but the classic version is typically prepared with lentils, chickpeas, and chaariya (broken noodles), and lamb or beef stock.

You can find this nutritious dish served in a traditional Moroccan bowl in every corner of Morocco.

Bastilla

One of the best foods to eat in Morocco if you are a fan of the sweet and salty flavor combination is Moroccan Bastilla

This Moroccan delicacy is traditionally a savory pigeon pie served at weddings and celebrations.
Today you can also find Bastilla made with chicken or seafood.

The meat is cooked with a variety of spices such as pepper, ginger, saffron, cinnamon and then wrapped up in warqa (a crispy pastry).

The Bastilla is then garnished with sugar icing, fried almonds scented with orange flower water to produce a fragrant pie of pure deliciousness.

Babouche (Snail Soup)

Babouche is a very famous street food in Morocco. You can find snail soup vendors all over Morocco, but this dish is mostly well-known in Jemaa El Fna in Marrakech

What makes this soup special is not just the snails but the varied spices that go into its making including ginger, thyme, rosemary, bay leaf, chili pepper, anise, sage, cumin..etc.

This hot and spicy Moroccan dish is typically served in a bowl and consumed using toothpicks to scoop up the snail from its shell. Moroccans also believe that Babouche is effective against fever and helps with digestion.

Zaalouk and Taktouka

Made with roasted eggplants, tomato, olive oil, garlic, and spices, Zaalouk is a delicious savory dip. Taktouka is another dip made with chopped sweet tomatoes and roasted bell peppers.

Both these flavorful dishes are often served as an entree with traditional Moroccan bread or as a side dish with tagine or other Moroccan meals.

Briouat

Briouat rolls are deep-fried pastries found in both triangle and cylindrical shapes. These bite-sized snacks are made in both sweet and savory variations.

Sweet Briouat are typically made with almond and honey and served as a dessert with Atay (mint tea).

The savory version of Briouat is made with either beef, chicken, seafood, or cheese fillings and served as appetizers.

Medfouna

Known as the “Berber stuffed Pizza,” Medfouna (Arabic for buried) takes its name from the way this dish is cooked; buried and backed in the sand of the Sahara.

Medfouna is a traditional Saharawis specialty made with meat, vegetables, and herbs, and spices stuffed in the dough.

Bissara

Bissara soup is a popular Moroccan dish especially in the blue city of Chefchaouen.

Made with dried fava beans, garlic, spices and topped with a drizzle of olive oil and cumin, this healthy soup is a winter breakfast favorite for many Moroccans.

Stuffed Msemen

Msemen is a famous street food in Morocco that you can find in most food stalls in the country.

24 Best Things You Can Do in Rabat (2024 Guide)

24 Best Things You Can Do in Rabat (2024 Guide)

Share

Morocco’s capital city of Rabat is more than just the administrative center of the country.

Rabat elegantly features a contemporary city that preserved its antiquity, embodying a distinctive architectural and decorative style.

With a privileged location by the Atlantic ocean, Rabat enjoys pleasant weather throughout the year.
What are the best things you can do in Rabat? Plenty!

In this article, you will find some of the best suggestions to inspire your next visit to Rabat.

1- Cultural Attractions in Rabat :

With twenty centuries of history to tell, Rabat is rightly recognized by UNESCO as a modern capital, historic city,  and a world heritage site.

Rabat reflects a unique cultural heritage; a product of the fusion between past Arabo-Muslim and  Modern Western legacies.

Several historical sites and ancient monuments enrich the architectural landscape of the capital, Rabat. If you want to experience the best out of the city’s cultural side, here is a list of the best places to visit in Rabat.

 Hassan Tower :

Hassan tower has to be the monument that Rabat is most known for. This master attraction was originally intended to be the biggest minaret in the world.

Built in an intricate Moroccan and Spanish-style architecture, the 44 meter Hassan tower bears history that goes back to the reign of  Yaqub al-Mansur in the 12th century.

Overlooking the Bouregreg river and surrounded by its long-standing columns in the front square, The red sandstone Hassan Tower offers a charming view.  Opposite the tower lies the Mausoleum of Mohammed V. This white building with its captivating gold-leaf ceiling and carvings is open to even non-muslims.

 Kasbah of the Oudayas :

Occupying the oldest part of Rabat, the Kasbah of the Oudayas is a 12th-century real fortress that later became a refuge of Andalusian Muslims fleeing Spain.

Entering through the grand  Andalusian-style gate, Bab Oudaya welcomes visitors to view a mix of Morocco’s cultural heritage and history.

Morocco has only one blue city. Says who?  Rabat’s Oudayas streets have just as much glamour as  Chefchaouen only with fewer crowds.

Bab Oudaya gives way to what is now a predominantly residential area with distinctive Andalusian-style alleyways beautifully painted in white and blue, iron windows, and uniquely designed doors.

The place is a peaceful and tranquil site and is the perfect place for a relaxing aimless stroll.

A tour in Kasbah of the Oudayas is incomplete without having a cup of mint tea at the touristic Cafe Maure (Moorish cafe). Not only does this cafe reflect the history of the city and the Andalusian-style of the Oudayas but it also offers a delightful ocean view.

Chellah Necropolis :

Two kilometers from the city center lies the ruins of Chellah, a marvelous mix of Roman and Merinid empires dating back to the 14th century.

This ancient archeological site is an atmospheric space where key Roman architectural remnants such as a forum, temple, principal roadway, and a triumphal arch stand out. A mirinaid-built minaret also overlooks the red sandstone walls of Chellah.

East of the site, you will find tombs of several saints as well as the  Bassin aux Anguilles, an Eel basin filled with coins, fish, and turtles.

If you head south, you can find the tomb of Sultan Abu Al Hasan and his wife under which you can find a shady paved road with trees and flowers.

Over the years, the Chellah site has also become a host to several of the city’s festivals, including Jazz au Chellah and Mawazine.

Mohammed VI Museum of Contemporary Arts :

For anyone with an interest in modern art, visiting the Mohammed VI Museum is one of the best things you can do in Rabat.

This museum is the first Moroccan public institution to meet international museographical standards.

The entire museum is also the first to be dedicated to the modern artistic movement in Morocco.

This makes it a perfect place to gain insight into contemporary Moroccan art in contrast with traditional Moroccan art that you can see about anywhere else in the nation.

2- Leisure Activities in Rabat :

So, you’ve had some relaxing time exploring the tranquil cultural attractions of Rabat and now you are wondering where are all the best places in Rabat to have fun activities?

Rabat offers its visitors a wide range of activities depending on your interest.

Royal Golf Dar Es Salam :

Ranked among the 100 best golf courses in the world, Dar EsSalam is a prestigious golf course located just 15 minutes from the center of Rabat.

This golf course is built in the heart of a  cork oak forest, covering over 440 hectares of fairways, palm trees, Roman columns, and narcissus flowers. This place is simply a real-life marvel to golf amateurs.

Horseback Riding Activities :

Rabat also offers a wide range of opportunities to have fun for horse-riding enthusiasts. You can find numerous equestrian clubs that offer rides, polo matches, obstacle courses, and more.

Some places you can check out are Poney Club de Rabat, Royal Polo Equestrian Club Dar EsSalaam,  and Royal Club Equestre du Lac.

Beaches and Water Activities in Rabat :

Bordered by the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Rabat can offer a memorable seaside experience to its visitors.

Whether you want to play your favorite water sports, go for a swim, or have a lazy day at the beach, Rabat’s beaches will meet all your seaside expectations.
