The Inauguration of Direct Israel-Morocco Flights: A New Milestone in the Normalization Efforts Between Morocco and Israel

Direct Israel-Morocco Flights

Under the re-establishment of diplomatic ties between Morocco and Israel in December 2020, both countries reaffirmed the importance of enhancing cooperation in all sectors, including tourism.

This has led to the decision to inaugurate direct flights between the two countries.

The announcement of a direct flight route between Israel and Morocco is also driven by Morocco’s resumption of international flights last June after months of travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Consequently, it has now become possible to travel between Israel and Morocco without a stopover.

On Sunday, July 25th  two Israeli airlines launched their first commercial flights between Israel and Morocco,  carrying hundreds of tourists and members of the Jewish diaspora from Israel.

The first two direct flights were set between Israel’s Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv and landed in the Marrakech-Menara International Airport.

These flights were operated by the Israeli companies  El Al Airlines and Israir Airlines.

Following these flights between the two countries, Morocco’s National Tourism Office (ONMT) signed a memorandum of understanding with Israel’s El Al airlines.

This memorandum aims to provide a common framework to promote Morocco as a travel destination, improve media coverage of the flight route, and essentially increase tourism between Morocco and Israel.

When Should you Expect  Regular Flights Between Morocco and Israel?

As of now, Israeli airlines operate one scheduled flight per week but hope to increase this number to five flights per week depending on demand.

These flights, which will take between five to six hours, will land at Menara Airport and will start at a cost of $499 for a round trip.

In the near future, El Al Airlines intends to operate three flights per week between Tel Aviv and Marrakech aboard its Boeing 737-900ER. This aircraft, the ONMT disclosed,  can accommodate 16 passengers in business class and 159 in economy class.

It was also indicated that El Al will operate three weekly rotations to Casablanca’s Mohammed V airport by next September.

Similarly, Israir Airlines declared its intention to open five additional flights per week between Israel and Morocco.

As tourism officials predict high demand, flights from/ to  Morocco will also be offered by Arkia Airlines and Royal Air Maroc.

Arkia Airlines is set to launch its direct flights to Morocco next Tuesday, August 3rd.

Royal Air Maroc also intends to begin operating flights from Casablanca to Tel Aviv later this year.

Additionally, the Israeli company Tal Aviation recently confirmed that Morocco’s national carrier Royal Air Maroc will be opening a representative office in Israel.

Your Covid-related Travel Concerns Answered:

Israel has issued a Covid-19 travel notice regarding travel to North African countries including Morocco. Thus, the Israel Ministry of Health requires travelers arriving in Israel from Morocco to self-isolate upon their arrival to the country.

Visit Agadir: tourism guide

Agadir: a Paradise of Golden Sands and Sparkling Sunshine All Year Around!

Why you should visit Agadir :

Agadir is considered to be the capital of Souss region and a major center of cultural and economic activity in Morocco.

Its coastline extends southwards to the Saharan provinces and what really makes it worth visiting is that it is just three hours from the main capitals of Europe.

Agadir city certainly holds some of the most beautiful beaches in Morocco, a space where you can forget all about your daily routine and stress of life. (Morocco’s most underrated places to visit)

Besides, Agadir is a place where visitors find an atmosphere in which they would enjoy doing a wide and varied range of pleasurable activities.

Agadir is typically a modern and coherent architectural design, very big avenues and spacious town center, green spaces such as The Valley of Birds and the lively Talborjt shopping streets and terraces where you can relax and sip coffee.

In this article you are going to find out a set of places and excursions to enjoy when visiting Agadir.

The Stunning Beaches of Taghazout & Tamraght

Fringed by banana groves, the beaches of Taghazout and Tamraght are some of the most stunning extreme beaches in Agadir.

Taghazout beach
Taghazout beach

They are located just about 19 Km in the north of Agadir, and are featured with their extraordinary climate.

They are very popular among people of Agadir themselves, widely known for the sport of surfing, there are even some clubs specialized in surfing and made specifically for helping people learn how to surf.

Moreover, there are also some other beautiful beaches along the coastline like Imourane, Imi Ouaddar, Aghroud, Tamri and more importantly Imsouane.

Marina: The Beating Heart of Agadir City

Just a few miles away from the city center, Marina is obviously a space for entertainment and seizing the day, and a prestigious and luxurious shopping area for tourists.

Marina offers clients various services, and activities along with fashion shops, restaurants of all categories the thing that guarantees visitors all they could wish for in the way of comfort, modern infrastructures, and first-rate service.

And not far away from Marina, there are plenty of swimming pools, spas, tennis courts, water sports, sea trips and so on. In fact, everything that a world-famous seaside resort should be able to offer its visitors.

The Valley of Birds: A Must-visit Place

The Valley of Birds is a zoo that holds inside it rare and different kinds of birds from South America and Asia along with some mammals including wild sheep and macaque.

The zoo also involves so many other species such as magnolia trees, banana plants, bougainvillea and oleanders which are surrounded all by a wonderful cascade.

It is absolutely one the main attracting areas in Agadir and concerning its location, it is situated quite in the middle of the city and extends to the corniche. It is being visited by hundreds if not thousands of people every day.

Souk El Had: The Biggest Market in Africa

Souk El Had is an authentic traditional market. It is undoubtedly one of the biggest and most wonderful Souks in Morocco. It opens six days a week, except on Mondays.

The market took the name of Souk El Had when it used to open once only on Sundays.

Behind its ramparts which are made up of clay, you find yourself in a timeless atmosphere and discover an abundance of goods, from the most contemporary to the most traditional.

The Souk was built in the early 1960s, after the earthquake and was first renovated in 1997.

Now it has gone through some modernization including a big roof that covers throughout the Souk and new flooring. Furthermore, it offers visitors a space up to standards in terms of safety and pedestrian mobility.

Souk El Had attracts customers of all kinds. Spices, olives, honey and dates, furniture and fabrics, crafts, fashion, household equipment, Moroccan traditional clothes.

Lots of things in fact could be found and bought with a reasonable and not that expensive price.

Souss Massa National Park: a Remarkable Geographical Area

The Park lies along a strip of coastland, stretching from the mouth of the river of Souss “ Oued Souss ”,  which is in the southern part of Agadir, to Sidi Moussa Aglou near Tiznit town.

It is a diverse geographical area that contains dunes, steppes, woodland, wetland and some arid zones.

Mamma life includes wild boar, jackals, foxes, hares, mongooses, wildcats, genets and porcupines.

Besides, the Souss Massa Park has exceptional and distinguished landscapes for visitors and visits to the park can center around two themes namely the discovery of the Saharan fauna and exploration of Ouad Massa estuary.

Souss Massa Culture: Finery & Food

Souss Mass has always been known that the overwhelming majority of its inhabitants are Amazigh.

That is to say, the culture and traditions of Amazigh people are being lively there in the region in terms of clothes and food.

Traditionally, Amazigh women wear silver bracelets that they never take off because in Amazigh custom, the richness of a wife’s adornments makes an indication about the family’s social status.

On some occasions, they put on their finest adornments which are often made from silver such as earrings, necklaces, and pendants, always coming in a wide variety of shapes.

Such jewelry has a symbolism, an art that is still alive today in Souss Massa region and specifically in Inezgane, Tiznit and Taroudant.

Moroccan cuisine, for certain, has its own great classics and countless variants, and they differ from one region to another but speaking of coastal areas like Agadir, we find that fish is at the top of a bill that includes tuna Tagine with raisins, monkfish with preserved lemon, as well as fish croquettes with saffron rice.

But what really distinguishes the cuisine of Souss Massa is that it incorporates a set of Amazigh produce such as argan oil, saffron, honey and almonds.

And of course, olive oil is always on hand along with cumin and a mixture of spices.

Generally speaking, Moroccan culinary is sophisticated and a flavorful one with its authenticity which is kept to the fullest.

Visit Ouarzazate : tourism guide

It is doubtless that Ouarzazate city has always been considered as one of the most attractive cities in Morocco everyone should visit.

Situated in the south eastern part of the country as it is very famous for its remarkable heritage and breath-taking natural surroundings.

In the midst of the desert, far away from the turmoil of modern life, in a world where the sand imperceptibly fashions its dunes and palaces.

Ouarzazate marks the beginning of the journey, the traveler gets amazed by its charming beauty and simplicity and also by the magic of the deep south.

Along the way, in the midst of nowhere, villages out of age come to appear, sheltered from the sun by the palm trees that stand basking against their walls and watered by lazily flowing rivers.

Here in this article you find out so many different places and things to do when visiting Ouarzazate.

Ouarzazate, a Place of Safety and Serenity

A long time ago Ouarzazate city had been a trading center for camel caravans from sub-Saharan on their way to Marrakech, Merzouga or Fez.

Countrysides made up of adobe buildings such as Kasbahs as well as lush green oases and lunar landscapes. The thing that helped the town lose no time in becoming a major tourist destination.

It is called the town of peace, serenity, generosity, simplicity and hospitality.

Besides, Ouarzazate was able to develop a set of quality infrastructures so as to make sure visitors are being welcomed in better conditions and they would enjoy a comfortable and carefree stay.

Among those infrastructures, we find an international airport, luxury hotels, holiday clubs, conference centers, restaurants and a golf club.

Ouarzazate Kasbahs

When coming to Ouarzazate it is highly important to visit the Kasbahs or sandcastles which are simply residences built from clay; their architecture is quite distinctive.

They are featured with striking originality and rare elegance of the mountain culture and beauty. They are also an expression of the social life of people living in the mountain and are considered to be Morocco’s dearest heritage.

Among those Kasbahs, we find the splendid Kasbah of Taourirt was built in the 19th century and is listed as a national heritage monument. Well famous for Its very old and astonishing architecture.

Visit Ouarzazate - Kasbah of Taourirt
Kasbah of Taourirt

The Kasbah has just been restored and now houses exhibition galleries, a library and an amphitheater. Besides the Taourirt Kasbah, there is another unique Kasbah called the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou which is thought to be one of the oldest and most impressive adobe palaces in Morocco. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site and is located just about thirty kilometers from Ouarzazate.

Its external walls display tiny windows with artfully designed shutters and it has only two doors which make inhabitants able to spot who is coming and going, while inside, it has a public square, mosque and Koranic school.

The Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou is also considered one the most attractive locations for filmmakers.

Ouarzazate: The New Hollywood, One of the Primary Shooting Locations in Africa

Obviously speaking, one more important thing that distinguishes Ouarzazate from the rest of Moroccan cities is its magnificent landscapes, radiant light and ideal climatic conditions, the thing that has always drawn filmmakers to the region including the world’s greatest directors, Americans, Italians, and French alike.

They opt for Ouarzazate as one of their primary and major filming locations due to its sumptuous surroundings. The town contains three large studios.

The Atlas Studios, which were set up in 1983, are open to the public and are certainly worth discovering and visiting.

Another attraction is the town’s Museum of Cinematography which was a long time ago, an Italian studio before it recently turned out to be an outstanding museum.

Although it is a museum now, it is still used as one of the key shooting locations by many directors.

Ouarzazate: The New Hollywood
Ouarzazate: film and cinema studio

More than that, Ouarzazate now is a school of movie industry because it has own its training institute which is specialized in making ready and qualifying human resources in terms of movie making professionals and technicians that could response to the demands of the market, where students of the institute get to learn the ins and outs of the industry and its various branches such as film sets and machinery, production management, decoration, hairstyling and makeup, costumes and dressing as well as special effects.

The Heart of The Oasis and The Desert Attraction

Known as the road of a thousand Kasbahs, Ouarzazate makes an ideal point of departure and offers you an opportunity to visit countless beautiful places and enjoy a wide range of excursions, just following the rivers, you will happen to find out some of Morocco’s most beautiful valleys specifically Dades valley.

The Dadès Gorges - Tisdrine Ouarzazate
The Dadès Gorges – Tisdrine, Ouarzazate

Ouad Dades, as local people call it, makes its way through arid desert and passing lovingly within palm groves. The road continues to the rose gardens of Kalaat M’Gouna and leads to Dades and Todra gorges

Carrying on the same road, the first place to stop is the town of Tinghir. This small and pretty amazing town is built on the terraces of Todra gorge.

Tinghir is overlooked by a mound upon which stands the ruins of an old Kasbah.

Continuing on the same road and getting approached to Errachidia, which is another sparkling city, Ziz valley cuts its way and carries its extraordinary abundance of emerald waters through a narrow strip of greenery.

The next stop would be Erfoud town which is thought to be the greatest oasis in the Draa Tafilalet region that holds more than 700.000 date palms within its territory.

Crossing black desert, red dunes and reaching Rissani, a town that used to be a major stop off for camel caravans but much trading activity still goes on there today.

Further on, tarred roads give way to tracks and the dunes of Merzouga appear in the distance. Red sand stretching as far as the eye can see and watching the sun rise and set over them is truly an extraordinary experience as well as riding camels and exploring the Sahara and its magic beauty.

Marhaba Operation 2021

After more than 15 months of exceptional travel restrictions and halted activity due COVID-19 preventative measures.  Summer 2021 brings with it a much hoped-for relaunch of the tourism sector in Morocco and positive news for Moroccans living abroad (MRE), the majority of whom haven’t been able to reconnect with their families since the initial outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Following the  National Tourism  Confederation’s (CNT) recent  meeting to outline the  recovery plan for Morocco’s tourism industry and set up the reception policy for Moroccans residing abroad , The Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity launched the 2021 edition of its Marhaba Operation on June 15th 2021 under the effective presidency of his Majesty king Mohammed VI.

Introducing The Marhaba Operation

The Marhaba Operation is an annual humanitarian assistance program for the Moroccan community living abroad. It spans from June 5th to September 15th of each year.

The main functionality of the program is to ensure the best travel conditions for Moroccan citizens returning to Morocco during the summer period through dedicated reception areas operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Due to the global health crisis, this year, support has been upscaled to better assist Moroccans living abroad   throughout their travel.

A support team of 6 to 8 people made up of foundation executives, healthcare workers, and national security personnels will be present in each border crossing to facilitate medical and administrative processes to guarantee the convenience and safety of travel.

Reception Sites in Morocco & Abroad

For the first time in years, Spanish ports such as Ceuta, Melilla, and Almeria   have been excluded from this year’s program leaving Pperation Marhaba 2021 with a total of 15 reception sites in Morocco, France, and Italy.

Reception sites in Morocco include, Tangier Med Port, Port of Nador, Port of Al Hoceima, Mediterranean rest area (on the Tangier’s highway), Jebha rest area, Tazaghine rest area, Casablanca Mohammed V Airport, Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport, Oujda Angad airport, Fés Saiss Airport, Marrakech Menara Airport, Agadir Al Massira Airport.

Reception sites abroad are Sète and Marseille ports in France and Genoa port in Italy.

Marhaba  Operation Practical Protocols

To ensure the safety of everyone involved, the  Marhaba guide 2021 lists the following practical guidelines:

●     It is recommended that you schedule your arrival and departure outside of peak periods. That is, the 1st week of July, Eid al Adha, the 1st and 4th week of August, and 1st week of September.

●     It is necessary that you possess a negative PCR test taken no earlier than 48 hours of the date of entry into Moroccan national territory (this concerns Moroccan nationals classified in List A previously published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs)  Note that operation Marhaba is equipped with mobile Covid-19 analysis laboratories. Thus, in addition to the PCR test presented upon boarding, you may be subjected to PCR tests if symptoms are present.

●     If you are vaccinated against COVID-19, make sure to bring your vaccination certificate (this also concerns Moroccan nationals classified in List A).

●     Learn and stay up-to-date with the latest national travel protocols, curfew and travel rules inside Morocco and obtain any necessary permits in advance.

Last Sunday, King Mohammed VI instructed transportation and accommodation stakeholders to offer their services to MRE at reduced and affordable prices to facilitate their return to Morocco this summer.

Following his majesty’s orders, a number of transportation companies have gotten involved in the success of Operation Marhaba 2021; Maritime companies in Morocco have dropped their ticket prices to 995 € for long-haul lines and 450 € for medium-haul lines for families of 4.

Royal Air Maroc (RAM) has similarly reduced its flight prices up to 97 Є per passenger for families of 4+ and a 150 Є per individual passenger (Search and Book Cheap Flights to Morocco).

As a result, in less than 24 hours, Royal Air Maroc hit sales records with 120,000 flights booked by Moroccans living abroad. Consequently, RAM announced on its twitter page that additional flights from   Brussels, Paris Roissy, Frankfort, Amsterdam, Marseille, Toulouse, Bordeaux and Lyon will be available from the 1st to 7th of July, and return flights will be scheduled from 5th to 8th of August.

In the same vein, to encourage the return of MREs this summer, CNT has instructed the hotel industry   to adhere to measures supporting the return of MREs.

Leading the way is the  Accor group   with its summer discount offering a 30% discount on hotel stays around Morocco lasting until September 15th 2021.

Visit Morocco While Covid-19 : Key Information for Travelers to Morocco

It has been over a year since the Covid-19 pandemic started spreading all over the globe. Consequently,  travelling has become more complicated than ever!  From travel bans, restrictions, entry requirements to vaccination, Here is an up-to-date comprehensive guide if you are wondering if it is okay  to travel to  Morocco in the Covid-19 !

Are Moroccan borders open for international travel right now?

Currently, Moroccan borders are not fully open to visitors from all countries. That is, travel between from/to certain countries might not be permitted yet.

Following the recommendations of the Ministry of Health and the epidemiological data published by the World Health Organization (WHO), Moroccan authorities decided to gradually resume flights to/from the kingdom of Morocco starting from Tuesday, June 15, 2021. In this context, countries allowed travel from/to Morocco were categorized into two lists “A” and  “B”.

List A constitutes countries that demonstrate  improved COVID-19  control. These countries include Member States of the United Nations that are not mentioned in list B.

Travellers from list A – whether they are Moroccan citizens or foreigners – are granted entry to Morocco as long as they provide a vaccination certificate and/or a negative PCR test results taken within 48 hours before  arrival to Morocco.

Who CANNOT visit Morocco ?

List B  is a list of countries that are experiencing a wide spread of COVID-19 variants or lack precise COVID-19 case statistics. Therefore, these countries are not concerned with the loosened measures contained in list A. List B includes:

Afghanistan, Algeria, Angola, Argentina, Bahrain, Bangladesh, Benin, Bolivia, Botswana, Brazil, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Chile , Colombia, Congo, Congo (DRC), Cuba, United Arab Emirates, Eswatini, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Jamaica, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kuwait, Lesotho, Latvia, Liberia, Lithuania, Madagascar, Malaysia, Malawi, Maldives, Mali, Mauritius, Mexico, Namibia, Nepal, Nicaragua, Niger, Oman, Uganda, Pakistan, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Qatar, Central African Republic, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North), Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, South Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Chad, Thailand, Togo, Ukraine, Uruguay, Venezuela, Vietnam, Yemen, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Travellers from list B must have an exceptional authorization prior to travelling to Morocco, a negative PCR test result taken no less than 48 hours prior to arrival, and undergo a compulsory  ten-days quarantine once in Morocco.

Note that these lists are under constant revision and are updated every two weeks according to the changing nature of the COVID-19 situation in each country. For un-to-date information visit the official website of the Moroccan  Ministry of Foreign Affairs

All citizens of these listed countries travelling through another country are not granted passage into Morocco.

What if you are not from one of these countries and you want to visit Morocco? Are there any special requirements to enter ?

Conditions of entry to morocco :

For other countries that are not suspended, entry is conditioned by:

  1. Completion, printing and signing of a  passenger health form online to be presented upon arrival to Morocco.
  2. All  eligible travelers above the age of 11 must provide a printed negative COVID-19 PCR test taken no earlier than 72 hours before arrival to Morocco.
  3. Everyone must download the tracking app Wiqaytna.

If you are eligible to enter Morocco, it is important that you get acquainted with the restrictions inside the country before planning your trip. Here is an overview of Morocco’s current  “Health State of Emergency” and its restrictions :

Local restrictions inside morocco :

With the  COVID-19 situation being generally stable in Morocco at the present moment, the days of quarantine are over and  restrictions have eased up over the past few months. However, the kingdom-issued Health State of Emergency remains intact with a few restrictions.

This partial lock-down includes a nationwide, police-enforced curfew between the hours of 11:00 PM and 4:00 AM  in place until the 10th of June with potential extension. Movement during curfew hours requires a written permission from Moroccan authorities.

Restaurants, coffee shops, malls, and grocery shops all close down according to curfew time.  The general health protocol being followed includes checking body  temperature at the entrance and hand disinfection. Wearing a Mask is also mandatory.

As for means of transportation, buses, cabs, trains, and rental cars are all functional in compliance with curfew limitations. However, travel and movement might be subject to regular police checking especially at city entrances.

Hotels and accomodation facilities including riads and resorts are also open with certain measures. That is, wearing a mask at the reception and all other common rooms. Social distancing is also recommended.

Public beaches are open with recommended social distancing. Private Pools are also available for booking.

On the other hand, Museums, cultural spots, cinemas and theatres however, are mostly closed until further notice. It is expected that when they reopen, access will be limited to a certain number or require reservation.

It is worth noting that each city has its own restrictions measures decided by its own council aimed at stopping the spread of COVID-19. That being said, cities like El Hoceima and Tetouan have increased measures due to the  rise in the number of COVID-19 cases.

Domestic movement :

Within the framework of the Health State of Emergency, all provinces are categorized  into  Zone 1( less restricted movement and activities) and Zone 2 ( more restricted movement and activities) depending on the level of Covid-19 risk indicators in each region. Thus, domestic movement between cities  is limited and will often require an exceptional movement permit from local authorities ( mostly granted to people with urgent medical need, work-related reasons) that you need to provide to move in or out of the restricted cities. Restriction measures related to this are often weekly updated.

Most Underrated Cities and Places to Visit in Morocco

As the holidays approach, travelers  visiting Morocco often plan their trips around the handful most popular touristy  attractions in Morocco such a Fez, Chefchaouen, Marrakech, Ouarzazate, Agadir, Tangier or Casablanca.

For a distinctive experience however, whether you are visiting Morocco for the first time or you are re-visiting for more, you may want to stroll away from the crowds and visit lesser known places in Morocco that are no less vibrant or enticing.

Want to know more? Let us take you through a list of  the best underrated places in Morocco.

Morocco Most Underrated Cities :

1. Meknes

Located in the Middle Atlas region, the historic city of Meknes is plausibly one of the most underrated of Morocco’s four imperial cities ( that is, Fez, Meknes, Marrakesh, and Rabat). Meknes is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its vestiges of important monuments and historical heritage  placed in a rapidly changing urban environment. Meknes remarkably represents fortification architecture through its voluminous ramparts built in the Hispano-Moorish style reflecting elements of both Islamic and European architecture  and design.

Listed below are some of the top places you should visit in Meknes.

  • Bab Al-Mansour

The magnificent Bab Al-Mansour, one of the biggest gates in Meknes, is the main gate between Meknes’ Medina and Imperial City. Its design is one of the most exquisite  architectural delights not only in Africa but the world.

  • Volubilis

Just about 19 Kilometers beyond the fortified walls of Meknes is the ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis, one of the best preserved archaeological sites in Morocco. Located at the top of a hill, overlooking the countryside below it, Volubilis’ remnant forum, arch and palace make an incredible ambiance that brings together nature and antiquity to give you a walk spanning from the  amazigh’s kingdom to the roman imperial city up to the early islamic dynasty.
